“But God will redeem me from the realm of the dead; he will surely take me to himself” (Ps 49:15). Sacrifice thank offerings to God, fulfill your vows to the Most High, and call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me (Ps 50:14-15).
Psalm 49: The Brevity of Life, the Certainty of Death and the Futility of Wealth.
- Everyone, Listen (1-6). Who is God calling to "hear" and "listen" (Ps 49:1-2)? Why (Ps 49:3-4)? What should one not fear (Ps 49:5-6)?
- Everyone Dies (7-14). What can no human being ever do (Ps 49:7)? Why not (Ps 49:8-9; Rom 3:23; 6:23a)? What is unavoidable for everyone (Ps 49:10, 12, 14)? Then what happens (Ps 49:11)? What should we not do (Ps 49:13)? How tragic is this?
- Everyone, Be Wise (15-20). What is mankind's only hope (Ps 49:15; Job 19:25)? Why should we never ever envy the rich and powerful (Ps 49:16-20; 1 Tim 6:7)? Yet why is it so hard to not do (Ps 73:2-3; 1 Cor 15:56)?
Psalm 50: The Judge in the High Court Breaks Silence.
- All God's People Summoned (1-6). Who in particular is God summoning (Ps 50:1-2, 4-5, 7; 1 Pet 4:17)? Why (Ps 50:6)? What does God's appearance in a theophany (Ps 50:3) remind us of (Exo 20:18-19; Heb 12:18-19, 21)?
- All God's People, Be Thankful (7-15). Why is God not concerned with their sacrifices (Ps 50:8)? Does he need them (Ps 50:9)? Why not (Ps 50:10-13)? What does God require of them (Ps 50:14-15, 23; 1 Thess 5:18; Phil 4:6)?
- All God's People, Be Warned (16-23). Who has no right to use the Bible (Ps 50:16)? Why (Ps 50:17-20)? How did they so greatly misunderstand God (Ps 50:21)? What is God's stern warning (Ps 50:22)? Is this "loving"?
