Loved by God.

* It's good to suffer loss, for it draws me to the Cross where God's loss is more than what anyone ever lost. * We cannot hear what the stories of the Bible are saying until we hear them as stories about ourselves. * Let go of control. * Trust God. Thank God. Think about God. Talk to God. Talk about God.

Extravagance (John 3:16-21)

Familiar as Jn 3:16 is to us, they were uttered to Nicodemus for the 1st time. They're the revelation of the nature of God, and the ground of our love to God and man.

"The very nature of God is extravagance." Oswald Chambers.
  • Is God's nature extravagannt? Why (Jer 31:3; 2 Sam 12:8; Lk 15:12, 22-23, 31)?
  1. In John 3:16-21, what do the contrasting opposites of belief/reject, life/perish, light/darkness reveal about the human condition (Gen 2:16-17; Jos 23:11, 16; 24:15; 1 Ki 18:21)?
  2. What does it mean to "perish" (Jn 3:16; Isa 59:2)? To have "eternal life" (Jn 3:16; 10:10b)?
  3. How would Jn 3:16 affect the way you treat a nasty, self-centered, egotistical, rude, unpleasant person?
  4. Are people "condemned already" (Jn 3:18) because of specific sins or something deeper (Ps 51:5; Jer 17:9; Isa 64:6)?
    • Why is the warning of condemnation and judgment necessary (Rev 21:8; Rom  2:5ff)?
    • Are unbelieving people excused? Why (Rom 1:20; 2:15)?
  5. Why do people "love darkness instead of light" (Jn 3:19, 20; 1 Jn 2:15-16)?
    • Is there an area in your life where you avoid God's light (Jn 3:20)? "Stay in the dark" about something God wants to heal or correct?
  6. How can you practically "live by the truth" without being self-righteous (Jn 3:21; Eph 4:15; Rom 12:3; Gal 6:1; Mt 7:3)?
    • How would you “come into the light” (Jn 3:21; Mt 7:1, 4-5; Mic 6:8)?
